2003
Wilderness Risk Management Conference
October
17-19, 2003
Penn State University
Penn Stater Conference Center
State College, PA
The WRMC educates wilderness practitioners on risk management
and practical safety skills, shares field and administrative
techniques and raises the overall standards in the wilderness
adventure industry. Each year topics in the following three
categories are addressed:
- Management Concerns
- Legal and Ethical Issues
- Field and Medical Practices
The conference is sponsored by the Wilderness
Risk Managers Committee, a national consortium of
outdoor schools, guide services, organizations and land
managers, who are working towards better clarification,
understanding and management of risks in the wilderness.
In 1994, the National
Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) coordinated the
first wilderness risk management conference, held at the
school's Pacific Northwest branch in Conway, Washington.
Since that time, NOLS has been joined by other
organizations in co-hosting the conference. Current co-sponsors
are The Student Conservation Association and Outward Bound
USA.
