YMCA Transitions staff member reviews NOLS Risk Management
Kelly Fox is an Experiential Learning Specialist at YMCA Transitions in Seattle, WA. She participated in the NOLS Risk Management Training in October, 2005.
The YMCA already has solid risk management plans in place, but the training gave me the tools to think critically about the plan that we have, such as why it is that we might not have written policies for some things and how everything from marketing, to vehicle safety, to student briefings, to parent interactions, to legal waivers, to instructor trainings, are all part of my program's risk management. The training gave me a solid base to take a leadership role in adventure activities risk management planning here at the YMCA.
We have designed a full-day Risk Management training for all YMCA staff in the greater Seattle area who will lead (or supervise leaders of) adventure trips. This training will address everything from medical screening, to vehicle policies, to "emotional" risk management. This training grew partly out of the realization, following my participation in the WRMC in October, that while the YMCA of Greater Seattle has really strong policies and guidelines in place (and a strong department in charge of the legalities of our waivers, etc) we must work harder to communicate these practices to our staff.
Thank you for an excellent training that helped me take a leadership role in risk management planning at the YMCA.
