When you hear "Operation Purple camp" you should think: Kids Serve Too! The National Military Family Association's Operation Purple camp is a time for having fun, making friends, and reminding military kids that they are the Nation's youngest heroes.
As an organization dedicated to serving military families, the National Military Family Association recognized the need for more resources to support military children. In 2004, the Operation Purple program was created as a way to help military children struggling with the stresses of war.
Since Operation Purple camp's implementation, the National Military Family Association has sent more than 20,000 military kids to camp for free. In 2009, Operation Purple hosted nearly 90 weeks of camp held in 62 locations in 37 states and territories. Camps are free to all participants thanks to support from the Sierra Club and The Sierra Club Foundation.
The National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple program and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) recognize that when a military family member is deployed the kids serve too. The National Military Family Association carefully chose NOLS to develop young adults’ leadership skills. NOLS is proud to host two 10-day Teen Leadership Expeditions (Camps). Participants will choose between a backpacking or rafting expedition.
Backpacking
Come backpack through the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains at NOLS' Teton Valley location. You will learn how to camp, hike, navigate, and cook while exploring the backcountry. You’ll learn how to lead your expedition-mates and even how to be a leader when following. The tools you learn on the expedition will set you up for a lifetime of leadership at home, school and work and give you the skills for wilderness adventures.
Rafting The Salmon River bisects the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Here you’ll travel on rafts and oar rigs learning basic river skills like scouting, paddle strokes, hazard evaluation, and rigging boats. You’ll work hard, have fun, and return home with leadership skills to last a lifetime.
Whether you climb your first peak, sleep under the stars, or bake your first round of cinnamon rolls, this leadership expedition is designed to maximize adventure and learning. And, as with every NOLS course, these are field-based expeditions where you’ll travel the country on foot or by raft and sleep in the outdoors.
