The Arrow Week Expedition for the Archer School for Girls is a five to six day backpacking adventure through the American Southwest with the National Outdoor Leadership School. This program will have an educational progression for the 7th, 9th, and 11th grade girls. On each course, participants will develop leadership and teamwork skills through actual leadership experiences and a comprehensive theoretical component.
As participants’ knowledge, experience, and abilities increase, the Archer girls will take on increasing levels of personal and team responsibility for the technical and interpersonal aspects of the course. These responsibilities will be built upon after each expedition as participants gain expereince and explore different course locations.
The girls will learn the outdoor and leadership skills necessary to lead their peers for a day and help facilitate the decision-making process both on trail and in camp. These skills provide great transference back to life at school and home and they will come back each year as better leaders and role models for their peers.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the 11th grade girls will explore the diverse habitats of the mountains in Southern Arizona and New Mexico in late September and basing out of NOLS Southwest in Tucson, Arizona. The 7th and 9th grade girls will travel to Green River, Utah in April to gear up for their expeditions backpacking through the beautiful canyons and Anasazi ruins of Southern Utah.
