NOLS an Outside Adventure Grant Sponsor

Real Kids Exploring
the Real World
The search is on. Outside magazine is combing America's
schools, parks, mountains, and cities to find the next generation
of great explorers.
Ever thought of traversing the Catskills or exploring the
Everglades? Outside is seeking the most creative
and intelligent proposals from teens across America. You
too could be just a step away from taking your place in
history. Join the ranks of past winners including our 1998
explorers who hiked across Baffin Island, Canada and distinguished
their outstanding trip by studying local culture and working
with the indigenous people. But submit your proposal now,
because time is running short for entering the 1999 competition!
Entries of any length (though the more detail the better)
are being accepted between now and March 1, 1999. Simply
tap into your imagination and submit an outline for the
expedition of your dreams! A panel of experienced explorers
are judging each proposal for the combined elements of exploration,
adventure, potential for success, and benefit to the natural
world. To qualify for the Summer of 1999 trip, enter now,
and turn your ideas for travel into the expedition of a
lifetime.
This national competition seeks kids who show the greatest
promise and desire to push the boundaries of their hearts
and minds just a little further. Aspiring explorers ages
12 to 17 may apply on their own or through their schools.
Over 1,500 teachers have already requested our free guide
to incorporate the Outside Adventure Grants into
their existing curricula. No prior experience is necessary
for this fun and mind-opening adventure, because additional
leadership, training, gear, and logistical support are provided
by outdoor industry pioneers including The National Outdoor
Leadership School (NOLS), Patagonia, and Eastern Mountain
Sports (EMS).
The Outside Adventure Grants combine exploration
and education to bring the excitement of extreme adventure
into the lives of kids everywhere. Outside wants
to reward the adventurous spirit by giving you the opportunity
to jump in, get dirty, and to encounter the world around
you! Take the initiative, and follow-up on your dreams;
learn how exploring the wilderness as a team also teaches
you hard skills like writing, research, geography, and environmental
sciences. The rest of the country can even follow your wilderness
expedition by watching television reports, reading print
coverage, and by browsing the dispatches on Outside Online
(http://outside.starwave.com). This year's winning explorers
will inspire kids everywhere to create adventure in their
own lives.
Take a chance at becoming the 1999 Outside Adventure
Grants winner! Here's what to do: Send your entry to: Outside Adventure
Grants, Outside magazine, 420 Lexington Avenue, Suite
440, New York, NY 10017. Entries must arrive no later than
March 1, 1999. Include the name, address, and telephone
number of every team member. For more information, e-mail
questions to adventure@outsidemag.com. GOOD LUCK!
