Risk Management Award to Jed Williamson

Lander, Wyo - John E. (Jed) Williamson of Hanover, New Hampshire, was the first recipient of the Charles (Reb) Gregg Award on October 16, 2009 in recognition of his contributions to the development of incident review methods and risk management audit process, designing preventive approaches for reducing accidents, reviewing programs, and investigating incidents in-depth for over 40 years. He was a founding member of the Wilderness Risk Managers Committee and still serves on its conference steering committee.

Mr. Williamson’s key contributions to the field of wilderness risk management have included editing the annual Accidents in North American Mountaineering since 1974; co-authoring the Manual of Accreditation Standards for Outdoor Programs for the Association for Experiential Education; and serving on the boards of the American Alpine Club, the National Outdoor Leadership School, and The Student Conservation Association as chair of their safety and risk management committees.

On the occasion of the 16th Annual Wilderness Risk Management Conference (WRMC), the Charles (Reb) Gregg Award was inaugurated to recognize exceptional leadership, service, and innovation in wilderness risk management. This award recognizes extraordinary contributions to the outdoor education community, to adventure and service organizations, and to programs and businesses that utilize wild places for their activities.

The WRMC is an annual event that offers an outstanding educational experience to help outdoor professionals mitigate the risks inherent in exploring, working, teaching, and recreating in wild places. The WRMC is sponsored by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Outward Bound, and the Student Conservation Association.
