DuPont Cordura® Announces Scholarship Program with
National Outdoor Leadership School
Wilmington, DE - November 3, 2000 -- The National Outdoor
Leadership School (NOLS) and DuPont Cordura® have
established a new scholarship program for students participating
in the semester-long wilderness education programs conducted
by NOLS.
Students selected to receive a NOLS/DuPont Cordura® Scholarship
will be awarded $3,500 to help cover the tuition costs associated
with the three months of intensive study. NOLS offers the
most extensive array of semester-long, college credit-bearing
programs that prepare individuals to become wilderness leaders
and instructors in the country. The Cordura® scholarship
is the first corporate financial aid opportunity for students
enrolled in the NOLS
wilderness semester program.
"The students who will spend an entire college semester
with NOLS camping, climbing, hiking or kayaking need to
be as durable as Cordura®," said Donald
A. Burich, marketing manager for DuPont Cordura®,
used in a wide variety of outdoor products including footwear,
apparel and equipment. "They will face all kinds of
challenging situations, as will the clothing they wear and
the gear they use. The outdoor skills and leadership qualities
the students take away from their semester in the outdoors
will serve as a source of inspiration for years to come."
"We are pleased to support NOLS and the programs they
provide to the outdoor community," added Burich.
According to Bruce A. Palmer, director of admission and
marketing for NOLS, the Leadership Semesters are the training
ground for future wilderness instructors, outdoor educators
and others who intend to make wilderness pursuits a life-long
passion.
"Since 1974, NOLS semesters have immersed people in
learning new skills, exploring new ideas and making new
friends while surrounded by the wilderness," said Palmer. "Nearly
800 students each year benefit from NOLS's years of semester
curriculum development experience."
"The NOLS/DuPont Cordura® Scholarship
will enable us to reach a more diverse range of individuals
who would greatly benefit from the educational experiences
provided in a NOLS semester program," noted Palmer. "The
scholarship dollars from DuPont Cordura® can
make the difference in a student's ability to participate
in the rewarding opportunities provided in three months
in the wilderness."
"NOLS semester students graduate with the outdoor
skills and leadership experience that can be used time and
time again in life," he added. "After the semester
in the outdoors, the students return to college or work
with a clear focus, organizational skills and a strong work
ethic. In addition, they can earn college
credits that can be applied to more than 300 college
and universities across the country."
The NOLS Leadership Semesters are offered year-round in
the Rockies, Alaska, the Southwest, , the Patagonia
region of Chile, Australia, Mexico and the Pacific Northwest.
Skills covered in the various locales include wilderness
travel, mountaineering, rock climbing, caving, river and
mountain travel, horsepacking, kayaking, canoeing, and sailing.
