What We're Doing at
NOLS Australia and New Zealand

Recycling

• Broome and Christchurch have excellent recycling programs and we bring as many products as possible to them.
• We use recycled toilet paper.

Transportation

• We use vehicles that not only fuel efficient, but cost effective--especially for use around town.

Being Organic

• Natural cleaning products, non-bleached and recycled paper are a priority for us. In Australia and soon in New Zealand, we are using fewer chemical cleaning products, utilizing baking soda and other more natural alternatives.

Efficiency

• All bulbs in both locations are now replaced with power efficient florescent bulbs when they need changing.
• We purchase rations in bluk to reduce packaging waste; we'll continue to look for better suppliers, especially in Australia, that cater to less waste.

Australia Goals

• Look at ways to use less power with our electrical appliances. Find ways to avoid keeping appliances on standby when not in use and utilize power conservation settings.
• Create an environmental information board, which contains local information and similar facts on waste from day to day purchases.
• Implement more natural aesthetics around the base. Plant trees around the buildings, and continue to make the base look as environmentally pleasing as possible.
• Emphasize water conservation through effective use of new irrigation system. Water plants only periodically and at night; change showerheads to low-flow types.

New Zealand Goals

• Install a composting toilet and grey water shower system.
• Change showerheads to low-flow types and effectively manage our water usage, which is provided by a well.
