| | | "Lining" is an important wilderness canoeing skill in the YukonTerritory. photo by Pascal Beauvais | This 45-day summer expedition includes backpacking in the alpine regions of the Pelly, Wernecke or Cassiar mountains of the Yukon Territory. The Yukon tundra comes to life for a brief but intense summer of almost continuous daylight. Bushwhacking through tangled willows, fording swollen rivers, exploring alpine meadows and watching for wildlife will all be part of your adventure in this truly wild place. After two to three weeks, you’ll trade in those well-worn hiking boots for some of the most exciting canoeing at NOLS. You’ll travel three to four weeks on the South MacMillan, Hess or Hart rivers in tandem canoes learning the art of the wilderness canoe expedition. These rivers twist through an incredible wilderness and offer both whitewater and flatwater sections. As you paddle down the river, you’ll learn technical river skills that you’ll use in future whitewater adventures. If you’re looking to pack in two skills—backpacking and river travel—on one expedition entirely unique to NOLS, a journey into this wild, untrammeled place by foot and canoe is a guaranteed educational adventure.
