The rivers of the Yukon Territory in Canada will be your home for duration of this River Instructor Course focused on whitewater canoeing. The rivers here are technically challenging and early spring weather can be quite cold; additionally, the extended daylight hours above the 64th parallel can make for long and challenging days. However, there are also many benefits to be gained from this Instructor Course, not the least of which is the amazing arctic scenery. While traveling in this region of boreal forests and expansive mountains, your course may come across the bears, caribou, and fish this area is known for.
Canoeing skills of all types will be covered in-depth on this course, from portaging to river rescue. You and your coursemates will be responsible for teaching both basic and advanced classes, providing the chance for you to receive peer and staff feedback on your class content and teaching techniques. While focusing on travel techniques and the finer points of paddling on the water, you’ll go over wilderness camping skills, first aid, and natural history in camp. We are excited to welcome graduates of this course into our whitewater canoe program at NOLS. We expect qualified applicants to be able to lead a group of novices safely and responsibly at the closure of the course.
