Winter Outdoor Educator

Designed for practicing and aspiring winter educators, this course gives you the skills to teach in any winter wilderness.

Instructors Evan Horn and Kayden Will teach students the techniques to assess avalanche danger, a key part of the curriculum on all ski and snowboard courses.

We begin with six days of workshops, including a Level I Avalanche clinic and two days advancing your skiing skills with professional ski instructors at Grand Targhee Resort.

Then, we’ll move into the backcountry for miles of skiing in unblemished powder. You’ll build elaborate snow kitchens and camp comfortably in snow caves, igloos, or quinzhees.

With coaching from your instructors, you’ll teach classes of your own and be taught by fellow students. For educators of all levels, teaching in the winter will polish your presentation skills and hone your class management. The longest of our winter courses, these 21 days provide some of the best expedition training at the school, preparing you to camp and lead well in any cold, snowy environment.

"The Winter Outdoor Educator course allowed me to learn the skills to practice safe winter backcountry travel, and the ability to teach the skills I learned in the backcountry to fellow students. My most memorable moments were experiencing a three-day winter blizzard at 9,000 feet, and enjoying the comfort of my quinzhee."
