From the tops of some of the most stunning and rugged mountains in the world, to the chasms of the West’s most celebrated rivers, this is a landscape that seizes the soul. Mountain man country. Lewis and Clark country. Oregon Trail country. A swath of territory that will be yours to explore with NOLS Teton Valley.
NOLS Teton Valley is the home of the NOLS winter ski program. At its core is our base of operations in Driggs, Idaho. Snug against the western flanks of the famed Teton Range, we are only minutes away from our wilderness classroom. Right out the back door are the Tetons, with their staggering profile against the eastern sky. This range—and nearby Grand Targhee Resort—is renowned for deep powder snow and fantastic skiing.
In the summer, these same slopes come alive in a flurry of wildflowers, and NOLS Teton Valley turns its attention to a summer of backpacking and river exploration. North and west lies the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area, the Lower 48’s largest wilderness. Sliced by the Salmon River, this area is home to river courses and is known for exciting whitewater and excellent fishing. To the west and south is a land the Spanish called El Misterio del Norte (The Northern Mystery), a reach of deep canyons, sweeping desert and the exciting whitewater of the Owyhee River, one of the West’s best kept secrets. Lesser-known but equally wild ranges such as the Beaverhead, the Lemhi and the Snake River Range also await exploration.
Idaho, Oregon, Montana, western Wyoming…vast country to discover. On your NOLS Teton Valley course, your tools of exploration will be canoes, rafts and backpacks, skis or snowboards, boots and climbing shoes.
