Where Do I go on my Spring Semester in the Rockies?

(The order of the sections is correct. It is improbable, but possible that one or more of these areas may change due to conditions or permit changes.)

SSR 1

Canyon Vista

Winter Camping and Skiing -- Wyoming Range, western Wyoming, the only confirmed Lynx home in Wyoming.

Wilderness First Responder

Canyon -- Grand Gulch, southern Utah.

  • Study natural history and explore Anasazi ruins.

Caving -- Bighorn and Horsethief Caves, Montana and Wyoming.

  • Explore beautiful underground cave passages and learn vertical rescue techniques.

Rock Climbing -- Sinks Canyon/Lankin Dome, Wyoming.

  • Sink's Canyon in Central Wyoming provides climbing on sandstone, limestone and granite walls.

  • Lankin Dome is a granite batholith in the high deserts of Central Wyoming

SSR 2

Rock Climbing

Winter Camping and Skiing -- Wyoming Range, western Wyoming, the only confirmed Lynx home in Wyoming.

Wilderness First Responder

Rock Climbing -- House Range, Nevada.

  • An extremely remote, desert climbing area that few people have ever climbed. Beautiful granite slabs and crack climbing.

Caving -- Bighorn and Horsethief Caves, Montana and Wyoming.

  • Explore beautiful underground cave passages and learn vertical rescue techniques

SSR 3

Devil's Tower

This semester provides an excellent progression for developing strong leadership skills: A winter section that masters the fundamentals of backcountry travel, Wilderness First Aid taught by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS, climbing, and long wilderness canoe and canyon expeditions that provide great leadership opportunities.

Winter Camping and Skiing -- Togwotee Pass, Wyoming.

  • East of Yellowstone National Park.

Wilderness First Aid

River Travel -- Canoeing on the White River, Utah and the Green River, Utah.

  • Begin on the White River in Utah's high desert plateau and converge with the Green River for class 2 and 3 rapids in Desolation Canyon, Utah.

Canyon -- Long and Mule Canyons, Utah.

Rock Climbing -- Needles, Black Hills of South Dakota and Devils Tower, Wyoming.

  • Begin in the high pine forests of the famous Needles climbing area and finish at Wyoming's Devil's Tower for long, multi-pitch crack climbing routes.

SSR 4

Winter Camping and Skiing -- Tosi Basin, Gros Ventre Mountains, Wyoming.

  • Southeast of Yellowstone National Park.

  • Ski in big, open mountain terrain in one of Wyoming's best backcountry skiing locations.

Wilderness First Aid

River Travel -- Desolation Canyon, Utah and Colorado's Yampa River.

  • Kayak, paddle raft and oar raft.

  • Begins with 2 days of flat water orientation, progressing to class 2 and 3 rapids on remote Desolation Canyon, culminating in 5 days of travel on Colorado's Yampa River Canyon through Dinosaur National Monument.

Canyon -- Dark Canyon and Canyonlands National Park, UT.

Rock Climbing -- Red Rocks, Nevada.

  • Steep sandstone routes provide long, multi-pitch climbing opportunities.

SSR 5

River Class

Winter Camping and Skiing -- Arizona Creek, Teton Mountains, Wyoming.

  • East of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park

Wilderness First Aid

Canyon -- Dirty Devil, Utah.

  • West of Canyonlands National Park.

  • Technical canyoneering in the canyonlands. Multiple river crossings.

River Travel -- Desolation Canyon, Utah and Colorado's Yampa River.

  • Kayak, paddle raft and oar raft.

  • Begins with 2 days of flat water orientation, progressing to class 2 and 3 rapids on remote Desolation Canyon, culminating in 5 days of travel on Colorado's Yampa River Canyon through Dinosaur National Monument.

Rock Climbing -- Sinks/Split Rock, Wyoming.

  • Sink's Canyon in Central Wyoming provides climbing on warm south-facing sandstone and granite walls. Split Rock is a beautiful granite climbing wall in the high desert of Wyoming. It was also a major landmark along the Oregon Trail.

Horsepacking

Wilderness First Aid

Canyon -- Mancos Mesa, southern Utah.

  • Classic mesa canyon country.

River Travel -- The Green River's Desolation, Gray, and Labyrinth Canyons, Utah.

  • Kayak, paddle raft, oar raft and canoe.

  • Begin with 2 days of flat water orientation, and progress to class 2 and 3 rapids on remote Desolation Canyon.

Rock Climbing -- Split Rock, Wyoming.

  • Climb at Split Rock, a beautiful granite climbing dome in the high deserts of Wyoming. Split Rock was a major landmark along the Oregon Trail. Its distinctive gunsight notch was visible for several days to settlers traveling west.

Horse Packing -- Red Desert, Wyoming.

  • Begin at the NOLS Three Peaks Ranch in Boulder, Wyoming.

  • Dramatic terrain, includes technical canyon travel.

River Travel -- The Green River's Desolation, Gray, and Labyrinth Canyons, Utah.

  • Kayak, paddle raft, oar raft and canoe.

  • Begin with 2 days of flat water orientation, and progress to class 2 and 3 rapids on remote Desolation Canyon.
