Kayaks, rafts, oar rigs and canoes will all be part of your fleet on this Instructor Course.

The canyons of Utah’s Green River, the birthplace of whitewater boating, are the perfect training ground for experienced whitewater paddlers and rafters to become NOLS instructors. A fleet of craft including rafts, kayaks, and canoes will offer plenty of opportunity to become familiar with the NOLS river curriculum as you travel through this beautiful and colorful region. We’ll focus on maneuvering techniques, safety and rescue skills, and other topics on the water and wilderness camping techniques on land. Your instructors will be guiding the progression of the curriculum, but you and your coursemates will also be presenting a number of classes. This structure offers the perfect opportunity to fine-tune your teaching skills and learn from fellow educators.

The course is typically broken up into several sections, one dedicated to canoe skills and one dedicated to river rescue skills, followed by a kayak and raft section. We’ll cover topics like hazard evaluation, communication skills, and natural history while evaluating your skills on the river. It’s our goal that you finish this course ready to take a group of novice students down a river safely and responsibly.
