Light and Fast Backpacking

Are you an athlete who enjoys outdoor adventures? Want to try out the latest in lightweight backpacking gear? Then this course is for you.

Partnering with GoLite and BackpackingLight.com, NOLS is offering the first authentic lightweight backpacking course in the world of outdoor education. This adventure will start in the equipment room as you and your instructors select and fit your lightweight gear and pull together your food for the expedition. Then the real fun begins—“shaving” the ounces. How light can you go?

Outfitted with 25- to 30-pound packs (10-15 pounds without food and fuel), you and your coursemates will be off to one of Wyoming’s most remote and wild ranges. You will travel light and fast, covering miles and enjoying the wilderness as you never thought imaginable—without the burden of a heavy load.

Plan to learn cutting edge lightweight techniques like cooking one-pot meals and staying warm and dry with minimal gear while honing traditional backpacking skills like navigation and Leave No Trace. After two weeks, you’ll leave with the knowledge and skills to plan and execute your own lightweight adventures.

"I love teaching wilderness courses because of the age group and because you can show the students how to take personal responsibility. What we impart to the students in those terms can really be applied to their lives, how to take responsibility for one's actions and how those actions affect others. We show them how they can transfer skills to the front country. During the course, they just get totally jazzed about the skills that they are learning."
