While sea kayaking in Patagonia, you’ll encounter a variety of spectacular environments, from remote picturesque valleys with views of glaciated peaks to the wet and verdant coast. You may also have a chance to meet the people who inhabit the rugged land of Patagonia.
Your expedition includes a stunning drive along the Carretera Austral (the Southern Highway), taking you through small villages where you’ll glimpse rural Patagonian life. You’ll work to learn sea kayaking and expedition skills as you travel by lush temperate rain forests, numerous waterfalls, sweeping granite walls, and glimpses of glaciers in the distance.
Home to Andean condors, albatross, the world’s southernmost parrot, otters, and southern sea lions, this region abounds with wildlife. You may encounter subsistence fishermen trapping crab or diving for shellfish, gaining insight into a way of life that has changed little in 100 years. You may also see the modern developments of salmon farming, a prolific industry for Chile.
"As the course goes on, students get a bit grimier,
a bit hairier, and they start to get a little more real. I try
to model values of commitment and leadership for the group, and
I do so with actions rather than words. Anyone can become an effective
leader given the opportunity and leadership tools."
