Semester in Patagonia

On this unique course, you’ll encounter a variety of spectacular environments, from remote picturesque valleys with views of glaciated peaks to the wet and verdant coast. You may also have a chance to meet the people who inhabit the rugged land of Patagonia.

Your expedition includes a stunning drive along the famous Carretera Austral (the Southern Highway), taking you through small villages where you’ll glimpse rural Patagonian life. You’ll work to learn sea kayaking and expedition skills as you travel by lush temperate rainforests, numerous waterfalls, sweeping granite walls and glimpses of glaciers in the distance.

Home to Andean condors, albatross, the world’s southernmost parrot, otters and southern sea lions, this region abounds with wildlife. You may encounter subsistence fisherman trapping crab or diving for shellfish, have the opportunity to meet a family living on a remote farm reachable only by water, or gain insight into a way of life that has changed little in 100 years.

"As the course goes on, students get a bit grimier, a bit hairier, and they start to get a little more real. I try to model values of commitment and leadership for the group, and I do so with actions rather than words. Anyone can become an effective leader given the opportunity and leadership tools."
