Alaska Mountaineering

Students with a background in glacier mountaineering will be best suited to this Instructor Course. You’ll explore either the Alaska Range or the Chugach Range, both classic Alaskan mountain ranges offering plenty of glacier travel opportunities, time to practice and hone your wilderness living and teaching skills, and the possibility of technical climbing and peak ascents.

While the days can be long (there’s more daylight up here!), often involving hard work and cold temperatures, the rewards of outstanding scenery and a rigorous educational experience can be great. Whether most of your mountaineering experience has taken place here or elsewhere, you’ll find value in both the approaches on Alaskan tundra and in the glacier travel itself.

Some students graduate from the Alaska Instructor Course ready to work in the NOLS mountaineering program, while others are prepared to work backpacking courses. Either way, you’ll appreciate the teaching techniques you learn from your fellow students and instructors as you explore all the facets of the NOLS curriculum here in the Land of the Midnight Sun.
