Coastal Sailing in Baja

February 2-8, 2014

Get out of the snow, slip on your flip flops, and get ready to set sail among the stunning islands of the Bay of Loreto National Marine Park in Baja California, Mexico!  Temperatures in the mid 70's, a nice breeze, and the desert by the sea make for the perfect winter escape.

The Bay of Loreto National Marine Park is a phenomenal island group that is home to several species of whale, dolphin, and a variety of other marine and terrestrial wildlife.  Seeing dolphins swimming off the bow of the boats and bearing witness to breaching whales as we sail nearby are common experiences in this region and season!

Learn or refresh your sailing skills on NOLS' 22-foot open-cockpit, centerboard, yawl-rigged Drascombe longboats. We'll spend our days practicing sailing skills and passage making as we journey throughout the islands as we camp nightly on the beach in secluded coves mostly inaccessible to larger boats.

Opportunities for coastal exploration, tide pooling, snorkeling and local fishing culture also abound.

Come find yourself take the helm, navigate the Sea of Cortez, and explore the incredible diversity this environment has to offer!

Here's a link to a quick video created by a NOLS Baja Semester sailing student. It gives a feel for Drascombe adventure and Baja terrain.
