Coastal Navigation Seminar

This seminar takes place at Villa Margarita, a beautiful private home in the mountains above Brewer’s Bay on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Staff and participants will live and learn together for 4 nights and 3 days. Each day we will work together to make breakfast followed by a morning learning session. We will break for lunch, and there will be another afternoon learning session as well. In the afternoons and evenings, there will be time to relax by the pool, wander around the hills, and explore the beaches below. We will collaborate on the dinner efforts as well.

The goal of this seminar is to achieve Coastal Navigation Certification and be well set up for your practical time out on the boat. As such, curriculum topics include navigation theory, collision regulations, aids to navigation, tides and currents, as well as chart plotting techniques and practice.

There will be course materials sent out prior to the trip to be reviewed before your arrival. We will work to keep content clear, concise and practical. There will be celebrations of knowledge (ie. short exams) throughout the seminar to formalize your certification. This certification and knowledge is essential to support great seamanship and future bareboat chartering.

If you are participating in the Alumni Sailing Trip immediately following, this seminar will prepare you well to utilize your newly honed navigation skills as we set sail throughout the islands.

Non-grad family and guests who are interested in the intricacies of navigation are welcome.
