W e must have been a perplexing sight. Twenty foreigners, an entire NOLS course, each with a huge backpack, were stacked up on one side of the rain-swollen river. Our food supply was out of reach on the other bank.
A man rode up on a dark, sturdy horse, drier in his goatskin chivas and wool poncho than we in our rubber and Gore-tex. "Por que no tienes caballos?" Porque somos estupidos, crossed my mind, as he simply turned his mount into the river and was across.
