Book Review
Reprinted from The Leader, Fall 2000,
Vol. 16,
No. 1
NOLS has recently published new editions to two of their
leading wilderness texts. NOLS Wilderness First Aid, Third
Edition, hit the streets this past summer and NOLS Wilderness
Mountaineering, Second Edition, was published this fall. Both
books are published by Stackpole Books in cooperation with
NOLS.
NOLS
Wilderness First Aid, by Tod Schimelpfenig and Linda
Lindsey, was first published in 1991. At the time, the book
set the standard for first aid books with a focus on outdoors
medicine. That is still true today. The third edition includes
chapters on leadership and communication in emergency procedures,
new wilderness medicine protocols and more. It's a practical,
hands-on text written in an easy-to-understand style. It
is the ultimate field text for wilderness medicine.
NOLS
Wilderness Mountaineering by Phil Powers, a well-known
mountaineer, is also a practical, hands-on guide written
in good style. The second edition has been updated to include
advances in techniques, equipment and safety protocols.
It is filled with common sense advice for budding and veteran
climbers alike. Chapters on climbing and wilderness ethics
take the book beyond the run-of-the-mill climbing book.
