Job Description
The NOLS Publications Internship is a six-month introduction to writing, editing, and graphic design at an international nonprofit. The internship provides an opportunity for a range of writing and layout projects. Candidates must have strong writing and editing abilities and bring an enthusiasm for communicating in an effective and lively manner. In addition to honing your writing skills, you'll be an integral part of creating printed pieces from conception to layout to press.

Position Location: Publications Department, NOLS International Headquarters, Lander, Wyoming

Position Length: 6 month position

Compensation: $100/week

Requirements:

  • Strong writing skills a must
  • English, creative writing, or journalism degree or related experience preferred
  • NOLS graduate preferred
  • Experience with Quark Xpress, InDesign, and/or Adobe Photoshop a plus

Regular Projects:

  • Writing/editing articles for The Leader, the NOLS alumni newsletter
  • Writing alumni and staff profiles for the NOLS web site
  • Writing/editing general content for NOLS web site
  • Writing press releases and blog entries about NOLS events and alumni
  • Writing/editing sales copy for NOLS promotional materials
  • Writing/editing for the NOLS catalog of courses
  • Layout of staff newsletter
  • Layout of donor newsletter
  • Layout of other design projects as assigned
  • Assisting with administrative duties for the publications department

Personal, Educational and Professional Development Opportunities:

  • Add to your writing portfolio with published clips
  • Add design to your portfolio with printed layout projects
  • Gain experience with the pre-press process including, but not limited to, bidding projects, color proofing, and attending press checks
  • Receive a staff discount on a NOLS course of one month or shorter and attend staff seminars where openings exist
  • Receive one additional week off to be applied towards a personal wilderness trip
  • College credit available if requested

College Credit is available.
