Job Description
The NOLS Editorial Internship is a six-month introduction to writing and editing at an international nonprofit. The internship provides an opportunity for a range of writing projects, from web content to sales copy and articles for our alumni publication, The Leader. Candidates must have strong writing abilities and bring an enthusiasm for communicating in an effective and lively manner. In addition to honing your writing skills, you'll be an integral part of creating printed pieces from the drawing board to the press. Writing is only the jumping off point for the Publication skills you can acquire!
Position Location: Publications Department,
NOLS International Headquarters, Lander, Wyoming
Position Length: 6 month position
Compensation: A stipend of $100/week is provided
Regular Projects:
- Writing/Editing articles for the Leader, the NOLS alumni publication
- Writing alumni and staff profiles for the NOLS web site
- Writing/Editing general content for NOLS web site
- Writing press releases about NOLS events and alumni
- Editing/Proof-reading the NOLS Catalog of Courses
- Editing/Proof-reading NOLS pre-course information materials
Special Projects:
- Develop sales copy for NOLS promotional materials
- Be part of process to design and plan NOLS Catalog of Courses
- Gain experience with the pre-press process including but not limited to layout design, color proofing and press checks
- Help organize and maintain the searchable image database
Preferred Skills:
- NOLS graduate preferred
- Strong writing skills a must
- Experience with Quark Xpress and/or Adobe Photoshop a plus
Skill Development Opportunities:
- Opportunities to add to your writing portfolio with published clips
- Opportunities to attend press checks
- Staff discount on a NOLS course of one month or shorter. Possibly
attend staff seminars where openings exist.
- One additional week off to be applied towards a personal wilderness
trip.
College Credit is available.
