JOB TITLE: NOLS Teton Valley Operations Assistant
REPORTS TO: NOLS Teton Valley Operations Manager
DATES OF POSITION: June 1st through September 2nd 2011
JOB OBJECTIVE: This “generalist position” provides the behind-the-scenes expertise that supports NOLS expedition-style courses in the field and at NOLS Teton Valley. Responsibilities entail driving, providing support to students and faculty before, during, and after courses, and working as a member of a hard working, high-energy team to insure high-quality food, gear, facilities, and vehicles. This entry-level position provides an opportunity to learn and understand NOLS branch operations as a whole, and provides the support necessary to ensure a successful student experience.
NOLS Teton Valley has two operations assistant positions available for Summer 2011. One position will focus on providing assistance with field rations and in-town food. The person in this role will assist both our cook and rations manager in coordinating meals and field rations. The second operations assistant position will focus on providing assistance in our issue room, including issuing students equipment and maintenance of gear. Previous experience and knowledge of rafting equipment is desired. When applying for this position please state which of these two focuses you are more interested in.
QUALIFICATIONS: Great communication, flexibility, tolerance for adversity and excellent expedition behavior are all essential components of a successful summer at NOLS Teton Valley. The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate the desire to work hard, live in a small community, and build skills in a range of areas including education, leadership, facilitation, and organization. In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following:
- An excellent driving record and be at least 21 years of age (to meet NOLS insurance requirements). Prior defensive driving training is ideal, but not a prerequisite.
- Experience in one or more of the following fields: experiential outdoor education, outdoor recreation, outdoor retail, use and maintenance of outdoor equipment, support services, food preparation, basic vehicle maintenance and peer leadership.
- Experience driving vans, trucks and trailers is desired.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The operations assistant will assist the kitchen manager, rations manager, and equipment manager with providing pre- and post-course support to our summer programs. Driving courses to and from the field, as well as re-rations and evacuations will be a major component of the position. Other duties will include helping to keep the facilities and vehicles clean and in good repair, and assisting the program supervisor(s), operations manager and director with administrative work and other tasks as needed.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: A criminal background check is required from all NOLS employees.

MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving history.
WORK LOCATION: NOLS Teton Valley, located in Driggs, Idaho, at the foot of the western side of the Teton Range (40 minutes from Jackson Hole, WY). Limited dormitory style housing (in yurts) is offered for this position, but staff members are not required to live on property. The kitchen manager is given priority for housing due to early morning work.
