POSITION: NOLS Southwest Transportation Coordinator/Driver - Tucson, AZ

JOB OBJECTIVE: Safely drive courses to and from field, coordinate vehicle maintenance and cleaning, and perform light vehicle maintenance and repair. Participate as a member of the NOLS Southwest team in problem solving and facilities maintenance.
QUALIFICATIONS: NOLS experience preferred. Must have excellent driving skills, clean driving record and be willing to complete defensive driver training. Bus driving experience and commercial drivers license are preferred, however we will provide training if necessary. Possess basic mechanical aptitude, skills in organizing and managing others, a desire to interact with NOLS students and to live and work in a community. Trailer towing experience is helpful.
LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: As a member of the NOLS Southwest team, offer and receive timely feedback among team members regarding performance. Responsible for vehicle use planning, shared responsibility for supervising and coordinating other drivers. Responsible for supervising the loading of vehicles, and student leadership teams while driving to/from field.
FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Jointly responsible (with assistant director) for $10,000 yearly operating budget. Individual will be responsible for a fleet of ten vehicles (four vans, three crew cab trucks, two SUV’s, one Bus, three cargo trailers and one canoe trailer). You will also be responsible for credit cards and petty cash as assigned/disbursed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Manage fleet, track budget, record service and maintenance. Attend weekly Southwest staff meetings.
· Drive buses, various fleet trucks, vans and trailers throughout Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. In some cases, these runs involve 10-hour days behind the wheel and up to 15 hours of working and driving combined.
· Maintain fleet in a clean, safe, professional manner: perform or schedule regular light repair, maintenance and cleaning of vehicles; coordinate heavy maintenance with local vehicle repair businesses; maintain positive relationships with those service businesses.
· Schedule vehicle use, issue and de-issue vehicles to other drivers.
· Periodic heavy lifting, including among other things: tires, tire chains, vehicle seats, ration boxes and duffels (25-125 lbs.), fuel cases (36 lbs.), and backpacks (50-100 lbs.).
· Orient and train new drivers.
· Assist with branch operations, including rations, outfitting and program duties.
· Perform other regular facility clean up, maintenance and special projects and duties, as assigned by the assistant director.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: A criminal background check is required from all NOLS employees.
STARTING DATE: August 25th, 2008
· Training in Lander, WY or equivalent will be required unless applicant already has commercial driver’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This is an 8-month per year position (September-December, January-May). Private rustic housing is provided on-site. Kitchen and living areas are communal with other NOLS SW in-town staff. NOLS SW provides meals when students are in town.
