JOB TITLE:  NOLS Southwest Rations Manager - Tucson, AZ

NOTE- THIS POSITION IS FILLED 05.27.2008

REPORTS TO: NOLS Southwest Assistant Director

JOB OBJECTIVE:   Oversee all aspects of the NOLS Southwest rations department.  Provide adequate supplies of nutritious foods for all persons attending courses at NOLS Southwest in a helpful, service-oriented environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:   Familiarity with the philosophy of NOLS field rations and rationing system is preferred.  Must possess strong organizational skills and work ethic. Must be detail oriented, tidy and have the ability to work independently.  Must have excellent driving skills, safe driving record, and qualified to drive NOLS vehicles. Must be in good physical condition and able to lift and carry 50lbs. Ability to work flexible hours is required, including some weekends and holidays.  Excellent public speaking and teaching skills are necessary.  Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Mail and some prior budgetary experience is preferred.  NOLS instructor certification is preferred.

LEADERSHIP AND/OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Brief and supervise field staff in course ration preparation. Supervise students in rationing procedures on issue and de-issue days. Periodically supervise Operations Assistant and intern. Teach and supervise students in ration planning and nutrition for Independent Small Group Travel sections.

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: 

Track inventory valued at approximately $60,000. Work with Assistant Director in budget planning and food purchases.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

25%  Planning & Ordering: Plan all field rations using Excel program. Purchase rations for all SW courses.   Plan and order catered "in-town" meals. Purchase and arrange road meals. Develop and maintain positive relations with all food vendors. Track ration inventory and insure that sufficient quantities are on hand to meet course needs.

25% Maintenance & Cleaning: Maintain a clean, safe and organized Rations room.  Stock all ordered course food supplies. Maintain food preparation, serving and storage equipment in a safe functional condition.

20% Rationing: Supervise students in the preparation of field rations on issue days. Brief and advise field instructors on course rations.  Assist students and instructors who have food intolerances or allergies.

15% Administrative: Perform associated bookkeeping duties.  Track budget.

10% Branch Support: Drive courses to road-heads. Assist in handling course evacuations. Perform vehicle re-rations as necessary. Perform maintenance duties on branch facilities as needed.

Other duties as assigned by Assistant Director and/or Director. We are a small branch and rely on employee's skills as applicable.

5%  Classes: Teach students about the NOLS rationing process.  Teach students about nutrition and ration planning for Independent Small Group Travel sections.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: A criminal background check is required from all NOLS employees.

MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving history.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  This is an 8 months per year position (late August to mid-December and early January to mid-May). Private rustic housing is provided on-site.  Kitchen and living areas are communal with other NOLS SW in-town staff.  NOLS SW provides meals when students are in town.
