JOB TITLE: NOLS Rocky Mountain River Base Assistant Manager

REPORTS TO: NOLS Rocky Mountain River Base Manager

JOB OBJECTIVE: Orchestrate all logistical planning and support for courses at the NOLS Rocky Mountain River Base in Vernal, Utah.

QUALIFICATIONS: NOLS field instructor with a thorough knowledge of school-wide philosophy and NOLS Rocky Mountain operations preferred. Excellent organizational, written, verbal, and problem-solving skills are essential. Must be detail-oriented, creative, flexible, and prepared to work in a fast-paced and unpredictable environment with a non-traditional schedule (some weekends and evenings as well as periodic 24/7 evacuation on-call duty). A current CDL or the ability to obtain one is preferred.

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Supervises all river base staff and daily operations during river base manager absence. Helps set positive tone and build cultural norms for daily staff interactions. Point person for operational planning (transportation, outfitting, facilities, and rations).

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Signatory on the river base checking account. Maintains a NOLS credit card. Coordinates budget expenditures associated with transportation, outfitting, facilities and rations.


60% - Orchestrates all operations work (transportation, outfitting, facilities, and rations).

20% - Provides program supervision support by briefing and debriefing field courses as needed. Assists with the coordination and execution of field evacuations. Leads sustainability efforts. Provides back-up bus driving support.

20% - Other projects as assigned by the NOLS Rocky Mountain river base manager. Includes NOLS field work, if qualified.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: A criminal background check is required from all NOLS employees.

E-VERIFY: NOLS participates in E-verify.

WORK LOCATION: NOLS Rocky Mountain River Base, Vernal, Utah.

WORK CONDITIONS: 3/4 time position with benefits. Salaried faculty position possible for the fully qualified candidate. Housing may be available. Operating season lasts from March to early November.

MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving history.
