JOB TITLE: NOLS Rocky Mountain Ranch Manager
REPORTS TO: NOLS Rocky Mountain Director
JOB OBJECTIVE: Manage the administration and operation of all aspects of the NOLS Three Peaks Ranch, including: horse program, permit maintenance, course re-rations, course evacuations, budget, staffing, and operations of a working ranch. Ensure the NOLS Ranch is furthering the mission and strategic goals of NOLS.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to positively and effectively supervise diverse staff, and to be a team builder is required. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and to manage and track budgets is required. Experience and competency with horses and horse packing is required. Experience supervising and maintaining facilities, housing, and vehicles is preferred. Knowledge of, or experience with, management of a working ranch, ranchland, and pasture is preferred. This person must qualify to drive NOLS vehicles and have the ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising up to 15 ranch staff, and hosting up to 30 horse course field instructors and adjunct staff. Supervise risk management at the ranch regarding all ranch-related functions. Oversee instructional staff regarding curriculum, equipment use, and logistical operations. Develop new programs and course areas. Oversee logistics of the ranch’s day-to-day functions.
FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Responsible for development and maintenance of ranch property, horses, and equipment; manage an annual budget of approximately $250,000. Manage petty cash, credit cards and vendor/retail charge accounts.
LEADERSHIP, SUPERVISION & RESPONSIBILITIES:
20% Develop and supervise ranch-related operations, including NOLS Rocky Mountain and NOLS HQ interactions. Develop and maintain the ranch operating plan and budget, including requisitioning purchases, planning and requesting asset needs, and supporting the RM as an element of its operating budget. Maintain, track, and supervise horse use and grazing permits with the USFS and BLM.
20% Oversee facilities, vehicle fleet, and pasture. Oversee and track building maintenance and repair. Train drivers and maintain safety standards for operating vehicle/trailer combinations of up to 25,000 lbs. Oversee and track all pastures for irrigation needs, seeding, weed control, and productivity.
20% Oversee the horse herd, including all aspects of purchasing, leasing, training, vet care, feeding, shoeing, etc., seven days/week, year around. Purchase and maintain all tack and related horse packing equipment.
20% Create day-to-day schedule, including re-ration riding (staff, horses, equipment, vehicles). Ride re-rations, as needed (one to two per week), during the re-ration season.
15% Management of horse course safety, curriculum, and programmatic duties, including briefings, debriefings, horse course instructor development, and evacuation coordination.
5% Complete special projects and duties, as assigned, including NOLS field work if qualified.
