JOB TITLE: Pacific Northwest Program Supervisor

REPORTS TO: Pacific Northwest Assistant Director

JOB OBJECTIVE: Share in the Administration’s goal of providing a high quality student experience on all courses. Form an important communication link between field staff and the branch; supervise staff in regard to curriculum, route information, risk management, and instructor performance.  The Program Supervisor is an integral part of the program management team whose objective is to ensure that every Pacific Northwest student, field staff, and they themselves, have a rewarding and successful experience.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: Intimate knowledge of the NOLS mission, curriculum, and branch operations is vital. Previous management experience is beneficial. NOLS instructor certification is required, with considerable Pacific Northwest experience being helpful. Experience in the broad array of skills utilized in courses based out of the Pacific Northwest, preferably a combination from backpacking, alpine mountaineering, rock climbing and sea kayaking. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are essential.  Must be willing to facilitate occasional difficult situations and staff conflicts; on occasion will be called upon to communicate with students’ parents.  This individual must be organized and creative, possess an inspirational leadership style and strong supervision abilities.  Familiarity with word processing skills and Macintosh systems is desirable.
 

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: In coordination with all Pacific Northwest staff, supervise approximately 120 field staff in course preparation including the areas of logistics, risk management, performance and administrative concerns. Facilitate communication between NOLS administration and field staff. Must be willing to work in both program and operations roles to insure excellent student service.
 

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Signature authority on Pacific Northwest U.S. and Canadian checking accounts. Access to petty cash, requisitions, credit cards, TOI’s and travel authorities.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

·      Supervise Pacific Northwest/India courses; enhancing the student and staff experience wherever possible.

·      Provide field staff with clear and concise briefings, debriefings and evaluations in a timely fashion.

·      Actively guide staff in their development at NOLS including recommended trainings, course work and personal development. Provide career/annual talks with field staff as needed.

·      Work in coordination with NOLS Headquarters insuring that administrative tasks are completed in a timely manner in accordance with branch and school policies.

·      Regularly participate in evacuation phone duty including coordination and care of evacuees while they’re in town.

·      Network with other organizations in the region; promote regional initiatives and relationships.

·      Share in the responsibility of driving and other course logistics. Maintain current MVR and 3-D driving.

·      Regularly assist with maintenance, cleaning, and vehicle preparation; occasionally assist with course rationing, meal preparation and outfitting as necessary to maintain excellent student service.

·      Prepare year-end reports on staff performance, safety, land use, and season summary. Plan the following year’s course routes.

·      Develop curriculum and resources for the program, review and organize all course related paperwork. Maintain curriculum files, library and other resource materials.

·      Maintain the Pacific Northwest rendezvous site.

·      Contribute to NOLS publications with timely articles addressing local or school wide issues.

·      Participate in Program Supervisor Training.

·      Share in the responsibilities of on site living. Be an in-town EB leader.

·      May be required to act as fill-in field instructor due to injury, illness and possibly unavailability of field staff.

·      Other duties assigned.

DATES OF POSITION: Full time ~80% in town/~20% fieldwork

NOLS Pacific Northwest operating season is mid-March through mid-December.
