JOB TITLE: Southwest Program Supervisor
3/4 Time Salaried Faculty with approximately 52% in town and remainder in the field
REPORTS TO: NOLS Southwest Director
JOB OBJECTIVE: Supervises, assists, and coordinates Southwest field courses, briefing and debriefing of instructor teams; and compiles all related course paperwork. Serves as a communication link between field staff and NOLS Southwest, facilitates staff input into program planning, and provides continuity of feedback. Advises director and other administrative departments on risk management, staffing, training, curricula, and other issues relating to the conducting of these semester courses.
QUALIFICATIONS: NOLS course leader preferred; field experience at NOLS Southwest; background in climbing, caving and/or canoeing preferred. Must have thorough knowledge of school-wide philosophy and mission. Essential skills include the following: strong written and verbal communication; organization; supervision; facilitation, and problem solving. Macintosh computer/word processing skills, ability to work both independently and closely in a team setting, and willingness to work flexible hours are necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Plan and conduct instructor briefings and debriefings. Supervise field staff and liaise with assigned courses. Organize and review field paperwork; facilitate written course summaries for assigned courses. Educate instructors regarding contemporary school-wide issues; prepare end-of-season summaries, including the oversight of commendation letters to field staff. Utilize the NOLS Instructor Qualifications and Performance Expectations documents in evaluating instructor performance, and make recommendations for instructors' professional development.
• Work with the staffing, risk management, training, admissions, and other departments at the school to enhance service to students and staff. Act as a critical and vital link in communicating NOLS Accepted Field Practices.
• Coordinate logistics for assigned field courses. Prepare course itineraries for each course. Assist with permits, fee waivers and operational logistics. Assist instructors with route information and permitting requirements. Coordinate and help out courses on issue and de-issue days.
· Share in coordination of evacuations and support of evacuees while in town.
• Handle petty cash and manage travel advance money and reconciliations for course leaders. Sign checks for in-town and field staff and other financial duties as assigned.
· Promote field and in-town risk management. Identify and to the extent possible, investigate any questionable actions of students and instructors relating to field safety incidents. Oversee risk management database. Ensure that all relevant information is input and that seasonal information is mailed to NOLS HQ. The program supervisor must be conversant with the policies, position statements and expectations listed in the NOLS Current Safety Issues document.
· Manage drug kit inventory
· Manage satellite phone inventory
· Other responsibilities and projects as assigned by branch director such as periodically transporting students to and from the field, maintaining office supplies, sharing in the responsibility of maintaining safe, clean and efficient facilities.
· May be required to act as fill-in field instructor due to injury/illness and possible unavailability of field staff. Must maintain active instructor status.
