JOB TITLE: Mexico Sailing Program Supervisor for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009
REPORTS TO: Mexico Branch Director
JOB OBJECTIVE: To promote, maintain, and build one of the most dynamic and exciting programs at NOLS! The Mexico Sailing Program Supervisor oversees the management and development of the Mexico sailing program. This person works closely with other program supervisors to support courses and oversees sailboat fleet maintenance.
QUALIFICATIONS: NOLS field instructor who is qualified to CL in the Mexico Sailing Program. In addition, he/she must have experience in the sea kayaking or hiking program as this position will brief and debrief these courses as needed. He/she must have attended or plan to attend a defensive driving course, and we recommend communications/ LEADS seminars and program supervisor’s training. Previous experience in driving large trailers is preferred. Basic Spanish, word processing skills, knowledge of boat construction, fiberglass and wood repair and maintenance are required. This person must be able to host regattas and fiestas! A large repertoire of sea shanties is a bonus.
LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: The sailing program supervisor is responsible for supervising and supporting field staff, the fleet maintenance supervisor and assistant, and interns. In addition this person fills a role of general leadership at the branch level, working closely with the branch director, assistant branch director, other program supervisors and issue and rations staff to ensure the smooth operation of the branch and, most of all, a quality experience for Mexico students. Also performs the duties of evacuation coordinator, campus duty officer, and from time to time acting branch director.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
70% Manage the Mexico Sail Program, including:
· Supervising and supporting field staff
· Being an administrative contact for field staff and students
· Supervising evacuations and separations as needed
· Overseeing instructor training – Seminars, Instructor’s Courses, Clinics and in field training
· Following through on the vision of expanding the program offshore onto larger vessels
· Working closely with staffing office to put the strongest possible instructor teams in the field
· Supervising the fleet maintenance supervisor and assistant
· Monitoring fleet maintenance and replacement, and corresponding budgets
· Overseeing of sail and boat repair inventory and ordering, and corresponding budgets
· Developing and maintaining contacts with other sailing organizations. Promoting NOLS in the international sailing community.
15% Review and process course documentation and paperwork. Address needed improvements.
· Update pre-course information, evaluations, safety reports, course paperwork, etc.
10% Manage the NOLS Mexico Branch, including:
· Performing general leadership and supervisory duties as outlined above
· Operating the various systems at the branch (water, gray water, toilets, showers, solar power) and giving house tours to new arrivals.
· Supervising the sea kayaking and hiking programs when needed. Working closely with sea kayaking and hiking program coordinators and with twig support staff as needed.
· Maintaining contacts in the local community.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK: A criminal background check is required from all NOLS employees.
MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving history.
WORK LOCATION AND DURATION: NOLS Mexico, located in Coyote Bay, near Mulegé, Baja California Sur. Communal staff housing provided. Work period is September – April annually.
