POSITION TITLE: NOLS Southwest Assistant Director - NOTE: THIS POSITION IS FILLED 05.27.2008
REPORTS TO: NOLS Southwest Director
JOB OBJECTIVE: The NOLS Southwest Assistant Director assists the director in overseeing and representing NOLS programs and staff for all courses and activities taking place at NOLS Southwest. He/she coordinates programs, supervises all course logistics, support services, safety and staff in a way that furthers the NOLS mission.
QUALIFICATIONS: Intimate knowledge of the NOLS mission, curriculum, and Southwest operations is preferred. Previous management experience is beneficial. NOLS instructor certification is preferred. This position demands excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work independently, and willingness to work flexible and irregular hours.
LEADERSHIP AND/OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Work with the director to supervise approximately 85 field staff positions in course preparation including the areas of logistics, curriculum, safety, performance and administrative concerns. Facilitate communication between NOLS administration and field staff. Fill role as acting director during the director's absence. Hire and supervise equipment manager, rations manager, transportation coordinator and operations assistant.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: The position will have signature authority on the NOLS Southwest checking account. He/she will oversee the equipment, rations and transportation budgets. He/she will handle course-related travel advances. He/she will be responsible for petty cash and credit cards.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Liaise with semester courses. Brief/debrief field staff as necessary. Identify and investigate any questionable actions of students and instructors relating to field safety incidents. Act as evacuation event coordinator. Communicate concerns to parents when necessary.
• Assist director in monitoring compliance with government special recreation permits. Compile land use data and prepare use reports for federal land management agencies. Secure or renew permits as necessary.
· Assist director in proposing new course types; scout and coordinate efforts to explore logistics or program for these new course types. Prepare seasonal operating plans and logistic schedules and schedule support service activities. Communicate with NOLS Mexico and NOLS Pacific Northwest to ensure that logistics and transitions on shared semesters run smoothly.
· Assist director in constructing annual budget and in preparing monthly financial reports for HQ.
· Assist in identifying and allocating scholarship funds to appropriate candidates/applicants.
· Develop contacts and partnerships with southwestern colleges and universities.
· Teach harassment prevention and team building classes as needed.
· Other duties as assigned by director.
