JOB TITLE: NOLS Alaska Cook
 
REPORTS TO: NOLS Alaska Kitchen Manager
 
JOB OBJECTIVE:  To provide a variety of nutritious meals for staff & students at the NOLS Alaska Branch, optimizing local & seasonal foods, especially from our 2 on-site organic gardens, while training and managing kitchen staff and maintaining kitchen business, including menus, food sourcing, budget, and meal schedules.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: Food handling, cooking and/or baking experience is preferred.  Be able to lift at least 25# regularly, work long hours with early mornings and be self-motivated.  Commit to a full season and have a desire to live and work in a small community.
 
LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Responsibility for proper care, cleaning and maintenance of kitchen facility and equipment. Self-supervision; supervise students, in-town and field staff with clean-up duties.
 
FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Attention to proper care, cleaning, maintenance of kitchen facility.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: 
• Plan and prepare quality from-scratch meals for students and staff (lunch and dinner daily, early breakfasts when courses are in town, road meals for course travel days)
• Maintain a sanitary and organized kitchen facility.  
• Serve approximately 575 students and 150 staff & instructors (about 60 courses) between May 1 and August 31
• Maintain flexibility and enthusiasm about cooking
• Have knowledge or a desire to learn about dietary needs/restrictions of staff and students
• Coordinate with garden staff regarding food needs & availability, harvests, recipes, etc.
• Stay flexible concerning food availability, number of folks eating and changing course logistics.
• Arrive to work on time with a clean, neat appearance, prepared to work creatively and mindfully. 
• Communicate effectively with students, instructors, and staff of other departments at NOLS Alaska
• Help set up and take down seasonal kitchen
• Perform other tasks as necessary
