Ashley Lewis
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
NOLS Graduate:2000 Prince William Sound Sea Kayaking
Position at NOLS: Marketing Representative
Although her official title at NOLS sounds straightforward, Lewis’s
responsibilities go much farther than “Marketing Representative.” On
a typical day of the NOLS Bus tour, Lewis will be spreading her talents
thin, as a self described “ NOLS marketing magician.” She
will be giving Wilderness Medicine Institute demonstrations, fly fishing
classes, setting up and taking down the bouldering wall, spreading the
word about NOLS and alternative fuel, all while living in close quarters
with the other NOLS Bus staff for months at a time on the road.
Lewis has had a lot of experience travelling, but nothing as extended
as the NOLS On the Road: Finding Tomorrow’s Leaders tour. She has
spent time in Alaska, Hawaii, Israel, Ecuador, Mexico, France and various
places around the U.S., but is looking forward to seeing more of the
country while travelling on the NOLS Bus.
Lewis graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina
where she majored in Interdisciplinary Studies. The 2003 graduate focused
her major around integrating several arts, including photography and
writing. Lewis is classically trained in ballet and has been dancing
for 19 years. Before coming to NOLS she worked as a dance teacher for
ages 3 through 18 and was also a special events coordinator at a photography
gallery in Atlanta. She enjoys backpacking, rock climbing, sea kayaking,
and photography that allow her to pursue and document her other passion,
exploration.
When asked why she believes NOLS is an important organization, Lewis
says, “Because NOLS challenges its students to see the world in
a completely different way.”
She is excited to work on the NOLS Bus to “demonstrate the environmental
ethic that NOLS supports, by spreading information and knowledge to people
all over the country about alternative fuels.”
In her time off from the bus, Lewis will be trying to find various dance
companies and schools around the country where she can maintain her dancing
regimen on the road, as well as writing letters to keep up with friends
and family and taking lots of pictures.
