Steven Brutger
Position at NOLS: Development Officer
NOLS Courses: Semester in Patagonia, 2001; Instructor Course, 2002
NOLS is a nonprofit educational organization that largely relies on its community of graduates and supporters to grow and thrive. As a development officer, Steven Brutger helps maintain those relationships with NOLS alumni and donors and helps allocate their generous gifts to best suit the school’s needs and goals. Largely due to Steven’s efforts, NOLS continues to afford new opportunities for students and alumni. He describes this role with enthusiasm. “I have the amazing opportunity to develop and maintain relationships with people that really support NOLS’ mission,” he says.
Steven has been a part of the school since he completed a Spring Semester in Patagonia in 2001. After his semester, he went on to take the Alaska Instructor Course in 2002 and worked many years in the field before he transitioned to a program supervisor position at NOLS Rocky Mountain in 2008 and then to his current role in Development at NOLS International Headquarters.
Steven, whose father was also a NOLS instructor, grew up on a family guest ranch in Montana and began guiding horseback rides when he was 14. He has since led students, educators, and future instructors backpacking, climbing, horsepacking, and sea kayaking. Having worked in numerous NOLS locations, Steven’s favorite places to work are Cochise Stronghold in Arizona and the Red Desert in Wyoming.
Still an active outdoorsman, Steven spends much of his free time climbing, hunting, and training his two black labs for retriever hunt tests. He is also a member of the Wyoming Outdoor Council and Ducks Unlimited. The greatest source of joy in Steven’s life comes from spending time with his wife, Sarah, and their daughter, Ayden, who’s first word was “dog!”
