Janeen Hutchins
Position at NOLS: Assistant Director of Human Resources
NOLS Instructor since: 2001
Courses taught: Rock Climbing
One of Janeen Hutchins favorite memories from a NOLS course was the time when her group went rock climbing at night under a full harvest moon. A NOLS Instructor since 2001, Hutchins graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in forest ecology with a focus on environmental ethics. In addition to working for NOLS, Hutchins has worked for the New Hampshire Outing Club, Adventures Trek, Summit Achievement, and the Women’s Wilderness Institute.
Hutchins believes that the greatest lesson a NOLS student learns on a course is how to live simply—a lesson that she takes to heart having spent four years living in her truck traveling around the West climbing and working NOLS courses. Now a resident of Lander, Wyoming, Hutchins says that in her spare time she enjoys yoga, rock climbing, telemark skiing, and ice climbing; she won first place in the 2002 Cascade Creek Ice Climbing Competition.
Hutchins says that her favorite class to teach on a NOLS course is rock protection placement because “you get to play with lots of toys!” And she says that the reason she works at NOLS is because “I get to meet new and amazing people every month and have incredible adventures with them!”
