Peter A. Roy
Elected to the NOLS Board : First term 1999-2005; Second term 2006-2009

Peter was re-elected to serve on the Board of Trustees in June 2006. During his first term on the NOLS Board Peter served as chairman.
Peter, former president of Whole Foods Market, enrolled on a NOLS Wind River Wilderness course in 1973 and afterward described the course as a "life changing experience that completely altered how I saw myself.”
After NOLS, Peter attended Prescott College for a year and then got involved in a natural and organic food store in his hometown of New Orleans. By 1978, he was president of Whole Food Company, one of the largest volume natural product stores in this fledgling industry. In 1984, he founded an industry trade association that brought together the entrepreneurs of the natural foods supermarket business. This association led to the eventual merger of Whole Foods Market, Bread and Circus, Mrs. Gooch's, Wellspring Grocery, Bread of Life, Fresh Fields, and Whole Food Company. In 1993, the company was the first natural products retailer to go public.
Peter was president of Whole Foods Market from 1993 until he left the company in 1998. At the time of his departure, Whole Foods was the largest retailer of natural and organic products in the world, operating 88 stores in 20 states, and had been named one of the "Best Companies to Work For in America" by Fortune magazine. In addition to serving on the board of NOLS, Peter is a board member for United Natural Foods, West Marine, and Traditional Medicinals.
Peter is married and has two daughters, one of whom is a graduate of the NOLS semester in East Africa and also a Pacific Northwest Mountaineering course. His wife, Gillian, is also a NOLS graduate.
