John Dawson
Elected to NOLS Board of Trustees: June 2000
John brings lots of experience in many different areas to the NOLS Board
of Trustees. Dawson graduated as an engineer during the late 1950s and
enjoyed the technical work, but discovered that he loved outdoor activities
when he joined a caving and climbing club. Dawson says that the experience
changed his life and an opportunity to work with Outward Bound allowed
him to step out of the engineering scene into a world of outdoor adventure.
Working for Outward Bound in various locations, Dawson eventually worked
as the program director for Outward Bound Canada for six years.
After this period, Dawson worked as a coordinator of leadership training
courses, a consultant in Adventure Education, and a designer and coordinator
of various marine engineering projects. He was a cinematographer and
crewmember of a film crew documenting a Canadian climbing expedition
in the Himalayas and a founding vice president of the Sea Kayak Guides
Alliance of British Columbia.
Threaded through all of this, Dawson says, is an ever-expanding wonder
of existence, complemented by eclectic interests, and a continual pursuit
of adventure activities.
John Dawson was elected to serve on the NOLS Board of Trustees beginning
June 2000. He serves on the Risk Management Committee and the Strategic
Initiatives Committee.
