Homer L. Luther

Homer, Chairman Emeritus for the NOLS Board of Trustees, has completed many NOLS courses and prototype explorations, including trips in the Wind River Mountains, Baja, and Alaska.
Luther has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and an MBA from Harvard. He served on special diplomatic assignments abroad for Presidents Nixon and Ford to over 25 countries including historic presidential trips to the Middle East, Eastern Europe, the People’s Republic of China, and the Soviet Union. He was a vice chair of the Houston Host Committee for the 1992 Republican National Convention, director of events of the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations, director of special events for the 1988 Republican Convention in New Orleans, and an advisor to President George H. Bush’s 1988 campaign.
Luther is a private investor and has been an early investor in several of today’s major technology companies. He was a founder and chair of Eagle Management and Trust Company, which managed several billion in assets at the time of its sale to Guinness Peat, Ltd. of London. He served as a director of the University of Texas Investment Management Company, which manages the endowment monies for the University of Texas system. Luther taught at the University of Texas Business School and lectured at the Jones Graduate School at Rice University. He has also served on numerous non-profit and corporate boards.
Luther is a director of the Yellowstone Foundation, the national board of Trout Unlimited, and the Mesa Verde Foundation. He has completed two six-year terms on the National Park Foundation, as appointed by the secretary of the interior, and has served as chair of its alumni council. Luther has also served as a member of the board of the Grand Teton Park Foundation.
Luther is married to his high school sweetheart, Pat. The couple lives in Jackson Hole, WY, close to their ranches near Lander, WY. They also maintain an apartment on the I’sle St. Louis in Paris. They have three sons, all of whom are NOLS graduates.
While Homer loves the outdoors, wilderness and wildlife, he remains its perennial student. He also loves cooking, is learning to paint and is a published amateur poet.
Homer joined the NOLS Board of Trustees in the mid-1970s at a challenging time in the school’s history. He served on its board for many years including several terms as chairman, vice chairman and treasurer.
