Greg, a NOLS graduate and a former member of the NOLS Advisory Council, is a managing partner of Summit Partners in Palo Alto, California. In 1984, Avis helped found the firm, one of the nation’s leading private equity and venture capital firms, with approximately $6 billion under management. He has served on the boards of over 40 companies in the technology, life sciences, and specialized service industries, including Clontech Laboratories, Ditech Communications, Powerwave Technologies, and RightNow Technologies.
Avis holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. In addition to his other work, Avis also teaches mathematics at Eastside College Preparatory School, East Palo Alto, California, and is working with the school to fund, design, and construct a performing arts facility. He is on the boards of Community Foundation Silicon Valley, The James T. Irvine Foundation, and Williams College and serves as immediate past president of the board of the San Jose Repertory Theatre Company.
A graduate of a 1998 25-day NOLS Outdoor Educator course in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, Avis has been actively involved in fundraising and strategic planning for NOLS and has established an annual scholarship program for an Eastside student to participate in a NOLS course.
Avis and his wife have three children. He enjoys managing Little League baseball, backpacking, cycling, piano, and public policy.
Avis was elected to the NOLS Board in June 2002. He chairs the Marketing Committee and serves on the Finance/Audit Committee and the Executive Committee.
