Ed received a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1984 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1989. He has an extensive background in the outdoor business. After a three-year stint at Goldman, Sachs & Co. from 1984 to 1987, Ed joined Patagonia and worked in a variety of positions for seven years, including Managing Director of Patagonia Japan and Chief Operating Officer of Patagonia, Inc. He left Patagonia to run Moonstone Mountain Equipment, a maker of technical outerwear and sleeping bags that was emerging from bankruptcy. After a stint at a software company and at Red Envelope, the catalog and Internet gift retailer, Ed was CEO of FAO Schwarz, the famous New York toy business, from 2005–2009. His young daughters were thrilled.
Ed is currently on the board of directors of Vera Bradley and Wild Things LLC, a provider of cold weather clothing to the U.S. military. He is also on the National Council of the American Prairie Foundation, an organization trying to create a large-scale wildlife preserve in eastern Montana.
Ed has completed two marathons and enjoys fly-fishing, surfing, rowing, and cooking. He lives in New York City with his wife, Anne, and two daughters, Sophie and Constance.
