Pete Athans
With six successful round trips to the summit of the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest, Pete Athans has distinguished himself as one of the most famed climbers of the past 20 years. No Western climber has more summits of the peak. During the spring of 1997, Athans acted as cameraman/filmmaker on the NOVA film, "Into the Death Zone." The project featured climbers Ed Viesturs and NOLS alumnus-David Breashears. Athans also worked on the feature film, "Seven Years in Tibet." His early mountaineering training came at NOLS, when he took a mountaineering expedition course in 1974.
Producers of the highly acclaimed PBS television program NOVA are climbing and filming on 20,320-foot Denali in Alaska. NOLS is supplying equipment and expertise, including instruction, to the team of climbers. The team will meet up with Pete who will be on patrol from the Denali base camp at 14,000 feet.
